Hello Gloria,
SMTP is a protocol to SEND the emails. And there's another protocol called POP to RECEIVE the emails.
For example, when you configure Outlook, Thunderbird or another client email, you have to configure your account with the email server configuration.
So, this is another example : You have an email account at mydomain.com with the address myname@mydomain.com
To configure your client email, you will configure the incoming server : pop.mydomain.com
And the outgoing server : smtp.mydomain.com
Because it's a private domain, you have to authenticate to be able to send emails. Most part of time, you must use your email address with your password to be authenticated.
There's more informations about SMTP protocol : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_Mail_Transfer_Protocol
