How I stopped the Auto-bots without Captcha - 2008/04/17 21:28
Like the rest of you, I found myself fighting the auto-registering bots.
This week it finally got so bad, I mistakenly thought my site had been compromised, but no, it's just Acajoom allowing all those auto-bots.
After spending a considerable amount of time on this forum reading a few proposed work-arounds and undelivered promises, all while I was getting dozens of auto-registering every hour.
I had one idea which worked well for me in stopping the auto-registering for a different commercial offering several months ago.
Since I have installed this fix, it's been 16 hours. My raw access logs show 269 auto-registering attempts.
EXACTLY 0 (ZERO) got through. That's 0%. That's a 100% success rate.
Granted, I only have 16 hours of testing under my belt, but with 269 hits properly blocked, I think I'm on the right track.
What I did? Install Bad Behavior mambot/plugin. That's it!
Here's a link to the Bad Behavior mambot for 1.0.x installs: http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/

Here's a link to the Bad Behavior plugin for (native) 1.5.x installs: http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/
link_id,2891/Itemid,35/
Please test this on your installs and let me know! I would be very interested in any issues you find.
Good Luck!
4/19 UPDATE: I do not know if it was caused by Bad Bahavior of the sheer number of attempts, but after I installed the plugin, I started getting the 'memory limit exceeded' error with acajoom and other components. I simply updated my php.ini file to a higher limit, and the issue immediately resolved itself. I still have had no successful auto-registering attempts on my acajoom at this point.
5/8 UPDATE: As of today, I have still had ZERO successful auto-registration attempts. I have been very happy with this solution!
