Another Import Hurdle

I have a existing list of 1600 subscribers I've been sending through other software up until now. I am trying to import into Acajoom for two lists.

If I understand I can use a .csv file if the field name and contents are as follows:

Name,email,receiveHTML(1/0),confirmed(1/0)
"John Wade"," This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ",1,1

My use of 1 indicates a positive.

I am starting with the import of only 5 records. I receive this error:

lani@wightman.ca: The email entered is invalid.

Re: Another Import Hurdle

Hello John,

You have to write your CSV file without the quotes. The comma makes the separation between the different fields

Re: Another Import Hurdle

Ok, I see.

What text editor do you use to make your csv?
There's invalid characters inside your file, that's the problem.

I advise you to use a simple text editor like Notepad (for Windows), emacs/vi (for GNU/Linux).

Re: Another Import Hurdle

I have a contact manager named ACT made by Sage. It's been around for years.

From that database, I exported directly as a .csv. Opened in OpenOfficeCalc to put the fields in the order as per instructions, saved and then opened in notepad to find and replace the quotation marks.

Re: Another Import Hurdle

I've found the odd characters but in a programmers text editor. They don't appear elsewhere. The programmers text editor can do a find and replace but not for unidentifiable characters. I messing around for another editor but now luck so far. Any suggestions?

Try this software :

Kaboom converts code pages of text files, from shift-jis into UTF-8 and vice versa. It supports Windows, DOS, IBM, ISO, ASCII, ISCII, Macintosh and UNICODE code pages. Kaboom can read and write byte order marks (BOM) and is very useful for everybody who has to deal with text files in foreign code pages. In addition Kaboom has over 50 clipboard filters, for replacement of special chars into character entity references.

Re: Another Import Hurdle

Okay, I choked on the bone. I haven't a clue on how to use the program I downloaded. I took a stab in the dark a few times though. I've never had a problem using data exported as .csv from my contact manager ACT. When you looked at the data, what editor did you use to find the hidden characters. Will it strip them from the file using a find and replace?

Re: Another Import Hurdle

I did it. Here's how.

Open the csv file in open office (calc). Take each column separately and paste it using the unformatted paste into a Thunderbird email. Copy that and paste the column into a new calc sheet. Repeat with each column to be safe, but I just needed it with my email for some reason. Now you should have in this order on your calc page: Name, Email, 1 (or 0), 1 (or 0).

Save it as a csv file.

Close

Open as a note pad and you'll see quotations where you don't want them. You just want the commas. Do a find and replace of the " in the find and leave the 'with' - blank.

Save and then try importing that. It worked for me and all I know anything about is training dogs.
